36Purp – Ray Gun (ft. Xali) [Official Music Video]

by .

DIRECTOR: Archive Studios
PRODUCER: Chickenn

Broward county artist, 36Purp, returns to the CitrusRap pages, making his 2022 mark with visuals for his Chickenn produced track, “Ray Gun”, off his recent EP Take Risks And Proper. Xali, another CitrusRap favorite, features on the record. Through Archive Studios, they create a fitting video for this track that is both ominous and effective.

36Purp’s vocals complement the beat’s gritty bass line perfectly. His contribution to the song’s chorus and his sinister verse are both testament to that. As a closer, Xali keeps listeners on their toes with his energetic verse. Between their powerful camera presences to their menacing deliveries, both artists do not fail in keeping audiences captivated.

Arguably one of the Florida and underground rap’s biggest influences. This week we take you back to 2012 when the founder of Raider Klan, SpaceGhostPurrp, released “The Black God”. The debut single off of his debut studio album, Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp. Purrp used his grimey lyrics and signature dark ambience to convey a powerful message. Talks of breaking the cycle that our society has made in order to work us like slaves. Rising above this plane existence, to be something better. To be a God among men. To this day , SGP and Raider Klan continues to be a definite cornerstone to today’s hip-hop.

#TBT: Quad City DJs – C’Mon N’ Ride It (Video)

by .

PRODUCER: C.C. Lemonhead & Jay Ski
YEAR: 1996

It’s time to show some love to the pioneers out of Duval County. Jacksonville’s Quad City DJ’s were and still are one of the prominent Florida taste-makers who broke through to the mainstream in the 90’s. C.C. Lemonhead & Jay Ski, known as The Bass Mechanics at the time, gained noteriety for creating hits alongside 69 Boyz (“Tootsie Roll”) & 95 South (“Whoop, There It Is”). Both singles cracking the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts and over 5 million records combined. Just a couple of years later, they kept their flame ablaze by officially forming Quad City DJ’s and releasing this summer smash, “C’Mon N’ Ride It”, with JeLana LeFleur assisting vocals throughout their career. As we know, the song went on to become very successful like it’s predocesors, peaking at #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and selling over a million units. With the strength of this single it helped their only studio reach platinum status as well and earned them a spot one of today’s most influential and heavily followed sports movies “Space Jam”, as they performed the title track by the same name. The collective has since matched the success nor do they have to, to be honest. Because that list of Florida classic tracks, Quad City DJ’s have immortalized themselves in music history and today we are here to show our appreciation for some of Jacksonville’s curators of bass music.

An Inseparable Bond Through Music: seeyousoon Interview (Video)

At first glance, Orlando’s seeyousoon, a 9-member collective seems like an odd pairing of distinct characters. There’s a variety of personalities, races, and backstories. The only question that comes to mind is, “what brought them together ?”. The answer was music. The team was formed back in 2018 where it initially started with only 4 members: Joshua, Ignacio, Maddie and Kenny. Eventually, they expanded, bringing in Denny, Mitch, Drex, Luke and Dre. Before their debut, they spent time sparring one with another, bringing the best out of each other. The Orlando collective is a unification of artists who possess their own set of skills. They’re honestly a family.

What’s fascinating about this harmonious band is their synergy. How they bind together powers and utilizing different styles that is by all means brilliant. Their debut project, VIDÉ is a testament of their chemistry and how cohesive they are together. Indeed, there’s not a moment throughout this album, where one member overshadows another. Each member has their moment to shine throughout its action packed 33-minute duration. Maddie, Luke Summers, Joshua, Mitch, Drex, and Dre serve as vocalists of the group. Ignacio, Kenny and Denny are the architects who create these otherworldly soundscapes.

VIDÉ displays their versatility and how genre-less they are with their sound. It’s a compliment to say that you can’t pinpoint what their sound is. Seeyousoon is a melting pot of genres, where they go outside of its limit. Where it’s Hip-Hop, House, R&B, or electronic they continuously push against the grain with their avant-garde style.

On a Monday evening, they sit down with me on a zoom call trading stories of coming together as a collective. We discuss how their bond became strong and the things they’ve learned from each other. We dig into their process of making VIDÉ and so much more.

Be sure to check out their latest single, “FEVER“.
