The air is hazy. Smoke filled. Distorted figures move on stage in preparation. The crowd becomes restless and chants in unison “E-S-T! WHAT THE FUCK?! E-S-T!WHAT THE FUCK!” In response to their chants, the drummer stands on the bass drum enticing the crowd as he strikes the symbols in an aggressive fever. Then to the playing of “Wild Boy” he emerges on stage. MACHINE. GUN. KELLY. The crowd erupts. Their bodies leaping off the ground as their arms raise towards the sky in the welcoming of their icon. The sound of their cheers is deafening. MGK‘s performance is explosive as his versus and flows are emphasized by the invigorated band behind him and the synchronization of lights. The energy of his performance feeds those in attendance who have waited all night to see him. When finished, he turns his back towards the crowd in commanding authority as he absorbs the applause. The stage is his realm. The crowd his to control.

The Cleveland native has definitely evolved as an artist from the days of the 100 Words and Running and Laced Up mixtapes. Originally releasing music with solely a Hip – Hop element, MGK has now blended his style seamlessly with a rock element similar to that of Lincoln Park. It is this style that has separated MGK from other artists and earned the devotion of his fan base. This devotion is evident as people who come from different backgrounds converge at Grand Central Miami to witness their icon perform. His fans fuck with him heavy. With each declaration of the letters “E-S-T” that erupts from the Mid – West rappers mouth, the crowd does not hesitate to enthusiastically respond with “What the Fuck?!” This loyalty receives nothing but praise as MGK expresses his love and appreciation for the day one fans and the new fans made along the journey.

As the crowd chants “M-G-K” ferociously during a pause in performance, the rapper paces on stage. His eyes pierce the crowd with intensity. He breaks into “Swing Life Away” which is received by nothing but the cheers and screams of approval. Soon after, MGK lifts an enormous drum stick and emulates a professor lecturing his class. He points into the audience disciplining individual members for being unruly. He commands they shut the fuck up to which the crowd reacts with laughter before applauding him. He then points the drumstick to the center of the crowd and orders them to open and form a mosh pit. Crowd members obey eagerly with anticipation for whats to come. With the roaring of the band to signify the beginning of his next set, individuals hurl themselves into one another with reckless abandon and no consideration of their well being. They are possessed by the music and adrenaline as they collide with one another.

At times during the night, MGK‘s high energy performance toned down to take on a more personal tone. With the bass intro to his track “Baddest” dropping behind him, he dedicates the song to all the women in attendance who scream in admiration of him. Yet as quickly as MGK can lower the energy he can re – surge it in an instant. “A little More” gets the crowd amped as they rock side to side in unison with one another and leap with the rhythm. The message of the track resonates with those in attendance who have ever endured the struggle and overcame adversity. At one point a violinist emerges whose presence only contributes to the aesthetic and cements the message being communicated. With the conclusion of the violinists performance, MGK walks to the far end of the stage to reappear with an acoustic guitar in hand. Stringing the guitar, he serenades the crowd into silence as they gaze upon him.

The explosiveness to the beginning of MGK‘s performance only foreshadowed the explosiveness of its conclusion. Arms extend to the roof at the performance of “Mind of A Stoner.” Its signature verse “All my dreamers put your hands in the sky”is emulated by all in attendance. As MGK reaches in to the sea of hands to salute the fans, the crowd surges forward. The rapper reminds the audience where he is from with the performance of his final track “Til I Die.” To the rendition of this anthem the atmosphere becomes dynamic. Explosive. Electric. Members of the audience head bang as they leap in a feral frenzy. It is the climax of the night and a solid way to end his performance as he exits offstage. Yet the audience was not finished as they chanted “One more song! One more song!” To this reaction from the audience the band along with MGK responded by re – emerging onstage to perform one final set to the satisfaction of all.

MGK‘s performance at Grand Central on the Road Trippin Tour lived up to the hype and arguably surpassed it with an explosive showing. Thanks to the boys at Dope Ent, the city of Miami was once again host to a memorable performance that is surely to be embedded in the minds of those who attended. One can only look forward to the promising career of Machine Gun Kelly as he continues to evolve as an artist.
