Yesterday Mad Decent dropped the music video for “Doctor Pepper” which had previously come out in May. You’d mistaken to try to engage this track for anything other than it is; a party song with pleasing butts and sugary nectar. Diplo produced a bouncy, trap inspired beat that seems like it will garner a fair bit of remixing and sampling.
The chorus is vapid to say the least and frankly so is every word coming out of CL, Riff Raff, and OG Maco; but damn if it isn’t the catchiest tune I’ve heard in a while.
With such decisively “Riff Raff” lyrics such as “Drivin’ backwards through Rome in a Range Rover You skatin’ on thin ice, Anna Kournikova” and of course my favorite “Rap game Tony Danza with the hot handles. No tint on the glasses, Colonel Sanders”, you just have to forgive the dearth of commentary on worldly issues.
Atlanta rapper OG Maco’s brand of hushed spoken word quickly transitions into a hurried rap that brings an element of gravitas to the song, or as much as one can bring while he throws confetti at anonymous asses.
Even though it’s not the most impactful of work, it’s good to see American musicians working more with people from other countries. With Keith Ape’s “It G Ma” getting an English remix and CL from 2ne1 working with the Mad Decent crew hopefully we see more American-Korea fused tracks.
